Let’s be honest: feeling gratitude can be a challenge sometimes, especially this year. Some people simply have an easier time feeling grateful than others. But guess what? If you’re not a “grateful” type, it’s not your fault! Neuroscientists have actually done research on the subject, and certain studies suggest that your capacity for feeling gratitude may be in your genes.
Aside from the upcoming holiday, the reason we’re focused on gratitude is that it’s super healthy for your mind and body. Grateful people are more likely to take better care of themselves and be happier overall. And when you feel good, you look good!
Fortunately, gratitude is like any muscle in your body. You can build it up and get better at using it with the right exercises and tools. Here’s a quick list of easy exercises for boosting your gratitude this season:
Fake it till you make it
This is probably the strangest exercise tip you’ve ever gotten, but we’re referring to all the little behaviors you see grateful people doing. Smiling at others, letting people in line go in front of you, giving up your seat for someone in need, complimenting somebody: all these acts are actions of gratitude. So even when you don’t feel gratitude, acting grateful is a clever way to feel more grateful. This is supported by mind-body research — we aren’t making this up!
Start a list
Last year, we talked about starting a gratitude journal because research indicates it can boost your mood and your health. However, journal writing isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. We get it. So why not simply scribble down a list of the things you are grateful for as they occur to you? Jot it down on a sticky note or scrap paper. It doesn’t matter. What you’re really doing is training your brain to think about gratitude, and that’s the whole point.
Make self-care your #1 priority, especially during the holiday season!
You are going to get VERY BUSY over the next few months caring for other people’s needs. Buying presents, wrapping, cooking, cleaning, decorating…all the things we do to make the holidays a success are wonderful. But if you’re not careful, they will deplete you of energy and joy. It’s time to give yourself a much-needed break and schedule self-care treatments here at AVIE! It’s like magic, the pep in your step you get after your BotoxBotox & dermal fillers session or a BBL™ photofacial. You are truly doing something just for you that makes you look and feel amazing!
