It may not seem like it yet, but the fall season and back-to-school season are right around the corner! Many of us are heading back to the office now as well, as COVID-19 guidelines change and vaccination rates increase. We hope you’ve had the opportunity to relax and recharge a bit this summer, but we all know how hectic life can get as our routines change with the seasons and life goes back to its faster pace.
With all of that change, it can be harder to keep up with our favorite self-care habits — and yet it’s even more important! That’s why we have put together a few of our favorite tips for sustaining self-care through periods of change.
Establish your priorities
This time of year, it’s even easier than normal to find ourselves with too many commitments. Especially if you know you have trouble saying “no” when you sometimes should. We’ve all been there! If you realize you simply have too much going on in a particular day, week or even month, we recommend pausing and reflecting for a moment to consider which commitments can be canceled or rescheduled for a less-hectic time, and which commitments are most important to you. Until we pause and consider this, it’s easy to feel as though everything is “essential.” That’s why we’re here to remind you that your wellbeing is essential, too!
Exercise/move your body several times a week
We’re all used to hearing that we need to exercise more, but that is because it really can do a world of good! Beyond helping you become or stay physically healthy, exercising can be a very effective way to reduce stress, making it even more important to set aside a bit of time for it every week.
We say exercise or “move your body” because “exercise” doesn’t have to involve the gym or lots of push-ups — unless you want it to! Moving your body can mean taking a relaxing stroll outside three times a week, doing a 10-minute yoga or pilates routine, dancing to a few of your favorite songs in the living room…whatever kind of movement you enjoy and find to be stress-reducing. If it’s something you look forward to, you’re more likely to keep it in your daily or weekly routine!
Limit social media
Social media is a great way to stay connected with friends and family, but we all know how easy it is to keep scrolling through our feed long after we’ve checked out our loved ones’ posts. Especially if you work on a computer all day, it can be beneficial to deliberately disconnect from social media, or your phone entirely if that helps, after a long day of work. We recommend allowing yourself a short period of time, perhaps 30 minutes or less, to check up on your social media after work. Then it’s time to deliberately close those apps or put your phone away, so you can better unwind and let your mind focus on the present.
